Different Kinds of Agni Types and How to Determine your Agni
Ayurveda refers to four basic types of agni. As noted above, the specific nature of your agni corresponds to your specific type of dosha, whether that be vata, pitta or kapha.
1. Vishama Agni
This type of agni is related to vata dosha and represents an imbalance which typically manifests itself through the ‘wind of the body’, namely through indigestion, bloating and gas. This imbalance can either manifest itself in a slower and cooler digestive fire, or, alternatively, in a faster and more intense digestive fire. The vishama agni is irregular and keeps changing in nature.
Signs and symptoms of vishama agni:
- Irregular digestion
- Variable appetite
- Abdominal pain
Vishama agni can also give rise to certain emotional problems like anxiety, restlessness and fear. Ama (i.e. toxins) formed by vishama agni can sometimes lead to a brownish-black coating on the back of the tongue.
2. Tikshna Agni
Tikshna agni is related to pitta dosha. This agni type manifests itself in excessive heat and speed. This kind of agni arises when the hot, sharp and penetrating qualities which generally support agni are present in excess. This can cause hypermetabolism leading to overreaction. In such cases, nutrition quickly passes through the digestive tract without providing any nourishment to the body’s tissues.

3. Manda Agni

Excessive kapha suppresses the digestive fire, making it dull and unhealthy. This agni type manifests itself in slow metabolism, leading to excess weight and physical and mental heaviness. Manda agni generally takes longer to develop and also requires more time to recover from as well.

4. Sama Agni or Balanced Agni
When all three doshas are in harmony, you can achieve a complete balance of agni which is called ‘sama agni’. Sama agni results in perfectly balanced health, happiness and a calm, clear mind. Individuals with sama agni feel more vital and energetic after each meal. These individuals digest food easily and are not as easily affected by weather changes. With sama agni, there is optimal health and emotional equilibrium without any ama (i.e. toxins) on the tongue. Unfortunately, in this modern era it is rare to find individuals with sama agni. However, there is no need to be deterred if you suspect that you do not currently enjoy sama agni. Once you detect your imbalance, it becomes easy to correct. With proper guidance and discipline, you can heal and achieve a perfectly balanced agni.
How to Balance Agni
You can strengthen and support your agni by following certain healthy practices. In particular, a proper focus on food and nourishment and an Ayurvedic diet can greater enhance the balance of your agni. Here are a few things you should do to support healthy agni and good digestion:
Eat light and easy to digest food at regular intervals when needed to alleviate your natural hunger. Eating an appropriate quantity of food can help strengthen your agni. Let your digestive fire process one meal before having the next, and allow a 3 to 4 hour gap between meals. Remember, fruits take one hour to digest whereas grains take four to six hours. In addition, Ayurveda posits that healthy digestion can be supported by including six different kind of tastes in your food, such as sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent.

Support healthy agni
Meals tend to make you sluggish and sleepy, but taking a short walk after a meal is highly beneficial. In addition, once you have finished your short walk, lying on your left side for 10 to 15 minutes can help your body to digest. Doing so also rejuvenates and relaxes your body.
Cleanse your ama
You can cleanse your body of ama, or toxins, through the process of digestive cleaning. This process helps to repair, rejuvenate and detox tissues of your body which can boost your agni. A digestive cleanse focused on the removal of ama can be done in the following ways:
- Half or full-day water only diet.
- Fruit or juice diet for a full day.
- Kitchari diet (composed of basmati rice and mung dal) for a full day.
